The closet is finished, and it is FAN-cy. Okay, it’s just a closet, but what IS it about storage space that makes me so giddy? Do you get excited about empty shelves waiting to be filled?
(Please say yes.)
Let me show you where we left off on Monday. We painted the walls and installed this fun dog food dispenser that I got at a yard sale. When you have a giant beast who goes through a 40-pound bag of Purina every month, this thing comes in handy.
With that in place, we listed out what else we wanted this closet to store, in our wildest dreams:
- Wine bottles
- Coats
- Games
- Gloves, hats, scarves, etc. (Just in time for Spring!)
- Unending piles of dark chocolate truffles. (In my wildest dreams, I said, remember?)
So Andy got started crafting a shelving unit to fit the remaining space. He found this wine rack which looked simple enough to DIY. Just a bunch of basic boards, right?
He used two plywood pieces for the vertical frame of the shelving unit and started nailing in 1″x2″ boards at about six-inch intervals.
The “inspiration” rack had basic rectangular boards separating each wine bottle, but y’all: I married an overachiever. He routed them like this fancy to it up a bit:
Then nailed it all together like this:
Added some shelves above that, and installed it in the closet:
Here’s where I come in: did someone say it was time to caulk and paint?!
Sorry for the terrible color and/or lighting here. And/or photo subject.
After I worked my magic:
Check it out! All done.
The canvas bins in there are currently empty, which means I have
Open and available
STORAGE!
*Giddy!*
Here’s one more look at the before and after, just for kicks. (ARGH! So sorry about the dreadful lighting. DREADFUL.)
Genius storage. Great ideas. I might have to make a shelf like that for my basement.
i la-la-la-loooove that wine storage rack! very cool! 🙂 the closet turned out great… wanna come caulk and paint at my house?? 😉
so JEALOUS!!! Great storage and all prettified now 🙂
Wow, amazing. It's amazing how much love a new storage solution can bring us, huh? Well done to both of you. I love the wine storage but do I detect a few bottles missing in the last shot??
Closets that are useful and well done are happiness. The wine rack looks amazing – he should definitely be commended for the handy work! What a great combo storage solution.
It is gorgeous. I'm impressed with the way y'all build in shelves in your closets! And I bet Andy thinks you're really cute with a caulk gun! 🙂
This closet really turned out great!
It looks great! Your hard work really shows! 🙂
So, with this leftover space…is there room for me? Dark chocolate truffles + Taboo and Balderdash + a little wine = I'm there. Would it be creepy if one day you opened the door and I was sitting there, eating your imaginary truffles and drinking your wine and playing Taboo by myself?
Any recommendations on what type of caulking to use and how to apply it? I'm thinking my book shelves need it before I apply the last coat of primer…
We use "white lightning" brand caulk. My dad used to install trim
professionally, and he says that's the only one to use (but I bet it
matters less for a small project.) We just spread a small amount in
the crease, then wipe it smooth with a fingertip. It's pretty easy,
and definitely makes a huge difference in how it looks in the end!
Use them to your advantage, and enjoy an eventfully successful season. This can help to pass those fretful hours between sunset and sunrise.
Also, they can install personal trackers to their kid’s
backpack, bicycle, PC or any other important items they feel their child cant keep safe.
